In recent history some of the top second round draft picks or undrafted players have been: Patrick McCaw, Malcolm Brogdon, Josh Richardson, Norman Powell, and Tyler Johnson. Within the past ten years: Jae Crowder, Danny Green, and Wesley Matthews have been some of the biggest second-round steals. The common factor in all of these guys is that they were defense first players that got overlooked in an offensive minded league. Obviously they all developed an offensive game quickly in the league, but what has been the common trend in developing good second round players is that they come with the defense and just need to further develop on offense.
Brown is that package in a player. In fact I think he could make an impact as soon as next year in the 2017-2018 season. He has great peripheral vision off the ball, quick rotations, shifty feet, and a 6’9.5” wingspan to keep ball handlers in front of him. What I really love about Brown though is what he brings on offense. He uses the pick and roll game well which should go good with fellow draft mate DJ Wilson and center Greg Monroe. It also was how Brogdon first started to bud his way into solid minutes (along with his shooting obviously).
I believe that Brown will start out with a solid 5-10 minutes off the bench, but will wind up with about 15 minutes a game as the season goes on. He is set up in a great spot behind a guy like Brogdon who is well beyond his years in basketball IQ and alongside guys like Jason Terry and Matthew Dellavedova who have been on winning teams and know the right way to play. I see Sterling doing a lot of learning and developing well as the season goes on. He has all of the athletic ability to be a solid NBA role player and maybe with the right team, become a starter in the league one day.
I’m not saying the Bucks just picked the next Brogdon, Brown probably won’t become ROY as a role player, but he will be a key role player in the Bucks success and hopefully will push guys like Rashad Vaughn and Matthew Dellavedova to step up their game. I am very excited about the pick for the Bucks and for Brown. I think he will be put in a great situation with a great team and will have the opportunity to succeed.
