Week 3 Preview: Packers vs. Saints

The last two weeks have come easy for the Green Bay Packers as they dominated the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions. Now the Packers are heading down to New Orleans to take on Drew Brees and the Saints on Sunday Night Football.

The big story is the injuries heading into this game. The Saints are going to be without their star wide receiver Michael Thomas (hamstring) for the second straight week. Without Thomas last week the Las Vegas Raiders were able to slow down Brees and the receives in a 34-24 victory.

For the Packers, their star WR Davante Adams is listed as doubtful (hamstring) and will be a game-time decision, but the defense is looking forward to seeing their DT Kenny Clark on the field, even though he’s not 100%. Another player that is listed doubtful is TE Josiah Degura.

If Adams is ruled out, the Packers need Allen Lazard and Marques Valdez-Scantling to step up. Last year the Packers didn’t have much production outside of Adams and it showed when he missed time due to a hmastring issue. The wide receiver group has a chance to show that they are the real deal and don’t need help, especially after the Packers passed on some in the draft.

The Packers defense needs to step up as well. Towards the end of the Vikings game, the Packers gave Minnesota a chance, then to start the Lions came, the Packers didn’t have much of an answer for Detroit. It was after halftime that the Packers defense gained some dominance agaisnt the Lions, but for the Saints it will have to be for all four quarters.

Even though Brees showed regression against the Raiders, the Packers can’t take him for granted. Also, the player to stop will be RB Alvin Kamara, especially since that’s been the toughest position for the Packers to defend, but with the hope of Clark being back is that the could slow down Kamara.

Nonetheless, this is a big matchup for the Packers as they could start their season 3-0, but no matter what we are in for a fun game. Aaron Rodgers versus Drew Brees on Sunday Night Football could turn out to be a classic, especially since this could be their last matchup against each other.
