Brewers Week in Review: @ CHC, vs. St. Louis

Chicago Cubs: 4/17-4/19

Record: 1-2

Results: 6-3 W, 9-7 L, 7-4 L

Star of the Series: Jett Bandy (4-for-7, 2 HR, 2 RBI)

The Brewers arrived at Wrigley Field winning 5 of their last 6 games going into their last series of a 9-game road trip, and that trend continued in the first game of the series. Chase Anderson provided a solid outing, going 5 innings with five strikeouts, and the Brewers launched 3 home runs to take the opening game of the series against their rivals down south. However, the bullpen would struggle against the reigning world champions in the final two games, giving up a total of 8 earned runs. This included a disastrous inning by closer Neftali Feliz in the series’ final game, as a 4-3 lead was blown behind 4 Chicago hits, including a walk-off 3-run home run by Addison Russell that allowed the Cubs to take the series two games to one.

St. Louis Cardinals: 4/20-4/23

Record: 1-3

Results: 7-5 W, 6-3 L, 4-1 L, 6-4 L

Star of the Series: Travis Shaw (4-for-15, 1 HR, 5 RBI)

For the second series in a row, the Brew Crew rode a power trip to a game one series victory. This time, however, the Cardinals were their victims behind home runs from Eric Thames, Travis Shaw and Jett Bandy. Zach Davies tossed 5.1 innings of 4-run ball before Jacob Barnes would record his first save on the season to hold on for the 7-5 victory. However, just as in the Chicago series, the bullpen would struggle over the latter half of the series, including in game 3 where the Cardinals would score 3 out of their 4 runs from the seventh inning on. This is certainly not to say there weren’t stars in this series however, including the aforementioned Shaw.

  2. Cincinnati Reds: 10-9
  3. Louis Cardinals: 9-10
