In the Midst of all the March Madness for the Badger men’s basketball team, The Badger women’s hockey team has been getting overshadowed. The Wisconsin Badgers women’s hockey team has been an unstoppable force all year, and they are facing off against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the National Championship Game.
First things first, the Wisconsin Badgers women’s hockey team is great. They put on a clinic in the semifinals against Clarkson who they beat 5-0. The top line for Clarkson struggled the entire game, while the Badgers performed great. The game was close until the final period when one of the star Badger players, Annie Pankowski netted two goals in the final period to seal another trip the championship game.
The Badgers are facing off against their rivals, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Throughout the regular season, the Badgers and Gophers have been fighting for the #1 ranking in the country. These two teams continuously dominate college hockey year after year but neither has won a championship in 2 seasons. Wisconsin is looking to show the country why they are worthy of the #1 spot. The Badgers and Gophers have combined to win 10 out of 18 national championships, and tomorrow will settle the endless border battle.
This season as a whole has been a dominant one for the Badgers women’s hockey team. Wisconsin finished the season ranked number one overall, ending up with an astonishing 34-4-2 record and only losing one game on their home ice all year. Goalie Kristen Campbell had 10 shutouts on the year and an unbelievable .937 save percentage. The Badgers were led by top goal scores Annie Pankowski (27G, 22A) and Britta Curl (22G, 11A) and are looking to bring another trophy back to Madison.
The Badgers are heading to their 8th Frozen Four Championship overall and their second in three years. The Badgers won their last championship in 2011. The game is Sunday, March 24th and the puck drops at 1:30.
