Four members of the Packers defense did not participate in Thursdays practice. Safety Kentrell Brice and linebacker Joe Thomas are still dealing with ankle injuries. Defensive tackle Quinton Dial has a chest injury that kept him sidelined during practice. And linebacker Ahmad Brooks is still dealing with a back issue, and his status for Monday is still unknown.
There was a bit of good news on the injury report. Safety Morgan Burnett (hamstring) returned to practice as a limited participant. He is a very important piece of the secondary and will be needed against the pass happy Lions. The secondary should have Damarious Randall for Monday night. Like Burnett, he is dealing with a hamstring injury, but was a full participant at practice.
There are three linebackers on the injury report, the first two I mentioned above because they didn’t practice. The third one was Nick Perry with his usual hand injury. He was a full participant, and the last few games his club has gotten smaller. The Packers have had their struggles in coverage. As we all know, a consistent pass rush can help mask secondary issues. The Packers need Perry to be the guy they paid him to be this offseason, now more than ever.
Two members of the starting offensive line were listed on the injury report and one of them isn’t Bryan Bulaga. David Bakhtiari was listed with the same hamstring that’s plagued him all season. He was a full participant, so we should expect to see him on Monday night. Lane Taylor’s (ankle) status isn’t as certain yet. He was able to practice, but in limited fashion. The Packers are so limited on offense right now, and it would just make it worse if they don’t have their starting five offensive linemen.
Two other members of the offense were listed, and one of them is a surprise. Ty Montgomery is listed with his usual rib injury and was a full participant. The surprise is Martellus Bennett. There was no note of him of being injured in the Saints game before the bye. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported that it is a shoulder injury that kept Bennett out of practice (http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0717848871799100396-4). Bennett didn’t comment on his injury, so it is still unknown how it happened. Only the Packers could get less healthy over the bye week.
The Packers are only one game out of the division. It is important they don’t let that lead get much bigger. It starts with winning at home. They can’t afford to have another bad game at home. The Lions are short handed and struggling themselves. The Packers must find a way to win this game.
UPDATE 11/3/17: Morgan Burnett was upgraded to a full participant and Kentrell Brice was placed on IR.
