Green Bay Packers RB Situation

The last RB signing in Green Bay was Christine Michael. That proved to not be a great fit for the team as Michael will be a free agent this off season.  For the 2016-2017 season, Ty Montgomery was the starting running back when Eddie Lacy had a season ending ankle injury and James Starks was injured with concussion’s. Ty came in and proved himself and gained his starting spot. Don’t get me wrong, I like Ty Montgomery but, he can’t take over all of the RB responsibilities. He needs some help at RB. Now with the new season coming up many questions need to be answered. Who’s the starting RB next season? Are the pack going to draft a RB? Is Lacy coming back?

The way I see it, the packers have 3 options. They can draft a Running Back, sign a RB in FA, or sign back Eddie.

Let’s start with the first option. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Packers take a RB in the the draft. Who though? The only player I see the Packers drafting is Christian McCaffrey. The young Stanford Running Back can help create some chaos to the opposing defense with his playmaking ability. I think he could learn the offense quick and be a versatile running back that can catch passes out of the backfield and help lead the run game.

My second option that the Packers have is to sign a running back in free agency. The packers currently have $31 million to spend to resign players, sign rookies, and sign Free Agents.  I would love for them to sign a veteran RB like LeGarrette Blount or Darren McFadden. A veteran RB would help teach Ty and take some of the load in the run game. I see that if the Pack sign one of these veteran RB for a decent contract then they could still draft a top 5 RB in one of the middle rounds.  As a fan, it’s exciting for your favorite team to sign a big name player in free agency, but I don’t see the packers doing that with their tendency of drafting and developing players.

The last option is to sign back Eddie. The only way the Pack do this is if Eddie agrees to a low contract and hope he can bounce back from his injury and his weight issues. Eddie and Ty would be a good versatile backfield for the pack. If he does sign back it would hopefully bring him back to his earlier seasons and help the packers offense.

My Prediction: What I think will happen is that they sign back Eddie to a 1 year deal. Him and Ty could be a great 1-2 punch for the offense and start taking some pressure off of Aaron and help the run game. Eddie then will have to prove his spot on the roster and make sure the Packers sign him back to a long contract in 2018. This all being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Packers  draft Christian McCaffrey, if he’s still on the board in the 1st round of course.  Him and Ty would be a scary combination in the backfield and would create many matchup problems. Whatever Ted Thompson decides to do I myself as a fan would support it, and I think most Packers’ fan’s can say that too.
