Brewers Week In Review #1: Baseball Has Returned

Brewers Week in Review: Colorado, Chicago Cubs

Colorado Rockies: 4/3-4/6

Record: 1-3

Results: 7-5 L, 6-5 L, 6-1 W, 2-1 L

Star of the Series: 3B Travis Shaw (.357 AVG, 4 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI)

The first series of the year for Milwaukee showed signs of potential promise, but also signs of potential concern for the season to come.

Good news? This team showed they have the ability to score runs in droves at times, with an average of 4.25 runs per game. The offense, led by newcomers like Travis Shaw, Eric Thames and Jesus Aguilar, with the two former hitting home runs, was able to keep the Brewers in games. However, the bullpen and late innings in general did them in, with 5 Colorado runs coming in the 7th inning or later. Even in Wednesday’s 6-1 victory, new closer Neftali Feliz was needed in the ninth as Taylor Jungmann filled the bases prior to Feliz earning his first save with the team.

Chicago Cubs: 4/7-4/9

Record: 1-2

Results: 2-1 W, 11-6 L, 7-4 L

Star of the Series: SP Jimmy Nelson (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 1 BB in start Friday)

Milwaukee started the first of four series with their I-94 rivals with a gritty, ugly, but well-earned win on Friday night in 11 innings after a Mike Montgomery wild pitch allowed the Brewers to snatch the win. Jimmy Nelson provided a strong start and Jesus Aguilar continued to make himself known to Milwaukee fans with a big single in the 6th inning to tie the game at one. However, the rest of the series did not go as swimmingly. Chicago scorched Tommy Milone and the rest of the Brewers staff for 11 runs and 6 doubles in Saturday’s contest, which also saw three Milwaukee bombs, including from new utility man Nick Franklin. Sunday brought much of the same as Zach Davies surrendered 5 runs over the first two innings on the way to a 7-4 Chicago victory.
