Brewers Week in Review: Crew experience ups and downs

Brewers Week in Review: 4/24-4/30

4/24-4/26: vs. Cincinnati

Record: 3-0

Results: 11-7 W, 9-1 W, 9-4 W

Star of the Series: Hernan Perez (6-for-11 (.545), 2 HR, 8 RBI)

Once again, the Brewers showed their early season dominance (and power) over the Cincinnati Reds with a 3-game sweep at Miller Park. Outscoring the Reds by a total score of 29-12 in the series, the Brew Crew were paced by six home runs, including three by Eric Thames (numbers 9, 10 and 11). However, the true star of the series for the team may have been utility man Hernan Perez. Playing SS, 3B, CF and RF at times throughout, the Venezuelan tallied 6 base hits in the series, 5 of which went for extra bases (2B, 2 3B, 2 HR). Zach Davies turned in the best start for the Brew Crew in the series’ second game, throwing 5 innings of 6-hit ball with 6 strikeouts to even his season record at 2-2.

4/28-4/30: vs. Atlanta

Record: 1-2

Results: 10-8 L, 11-3 L, 4-3 W

Stars of the Series: Matt Garza (W, 6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 7 K); Domingo Santana (3-for-6, 2 HR, 7 RBI)

Just as the Brewers did to the Reds, the Braves returned the favor to Milwaukee. In the series’ first two games, Atlanta pounded Brewers pitching for 32 hits, including 20 this past Saturday where Matt Kemp paved the way to an 11-3 win with 3 home runs, the first such game of his career. However, the Brewers would rebound on Sunday, as they would save themselves of a sweep with a 4-3 victory. Matt Garza did his part, throwing 7 strikeouts in 6.2 innings while allowing 3 runs. However, the game’s MVP had to go to Domingo Santana, who contributed all 4 Milwaukee runs with a solo home run off of the scoreboard in the fifth inning, followed up with an opposite field bomb in the sixth.
